  About the Parkinson's Disease Society

About the Parkinson’s Disease Society

The Parkinsons Disease Society was founded in 1969 by Mali Jenkins, a carer whose sister had Parkinson’s.

The Society now has more than 29,000 members and 26,000 supporters throughout the UK and has invested more than £5 million in the last three years on promoting and funding research into the cause, cure and prevention of Parkinson’s, and improving available treatments.

It's the Society's priority to influence government to improve services at a local and national level and provide support for people with Parkinson’s, and help fund the development of the Parkinson’s Nurse Network.

  About Us

About Remembering Mum
The Family Photo

Let us introduce ourselves. We are a Sikh family born and bred in West Bromwich. There are three sisters and one brother. The eldest Tirtho is married to Bill Bual and lives in Hitchin, Tarsim is married to Ajit Nagra and lives in Caterham. Rupe is married to Bhinder Benning and lives in West Bromwich, while our youngest sister Balver is married to Jas Bisla and lives in Wolverhampton.

Mum, was a mother to many. In India she helped raise her husband’s family (following the death of our grandfather), her brother’s family (after her sister in law died) and then her own children in this country. We therefore considered it our responsibility to adopt the values that she instilled into us. As such it was a privilege to ensure that we were able to care for mum, even in the difficult times that lay ahead. During this time she continued to live with Rupe and Bhinder.

Our father, Ajit, suffered a stroke in November 2003, and reluctantly due to his medical condition we were forced to accept that his needs could only be met in a Nursing Home. His long journey finished at the age of 78 in March 2005.

When our mother was diagnosed as suffering from Parkinsons’s, we did not appreciate the devastating effects of this illness, on both the sufferer and their carers. It was only when we were faced with the harsh reality of circumstances that we became aware that not only is there no cure for the disease, but there are minimal funds allocated to providing any specialist nursing care or even a hospice.

As mum’s illness progressed it became more and more difficult to look after her at home, but we managed with the support of our extended family. This meant caring for mum 24/7 for the last 2 years of her life. We did however ask ourselves the question - What about sufferers who do not have an extended family or support network that are able to do this?

In January this year our mother’s pain ended when she passed away in her own bed, surrounded by all of her family as she would have wanted.

As a family we wish to help other sufferers and their families to be prepared for the challenging times that inevitably lie ahead of them.

  Our Mum

Our Mum

Rasham Kaur - 15/04/1929 -31/10/2007Our mum came to England in 1956 to join our dad who had been over here since 1951. In those days the intention was to earn enough money to repay any debts incurred in coming to the UK, and save enough money to return to India and lead a more comfortable life.

Bringing over your spouse was not a priority and it took our father 5 long years of hard graft to secure an easier living for his widowed mother and seven other siblings in India, before he could look to his own immediate family’s needs.

Mum had a long and memorable journey by sea accompanied by our eldest sister, her own sister in law (her eldest brother’s wife) and her two nephews. Why they came by sea is not clear. Some say it was the only form of transport that allowed them to bring heavy Indian quilts at a minimal cost, others that it was a cheaper method of travel.

During the Party for Parkinson’s evening on Saturday 22nd September, we and other members of her extended family will share some snippets of her 51 years in England. The most enduring fact that comes through from all who knew her is the kindness she showed to everyone. She always had a friendly word for everyone she met when she was out and about, and until her illness slowed her down, she was a most active lady with a very strong faith.

She has taught us, her four children and thirteen grandchildren, that it costs nothing to show friendship, and we strive to maintain her values.
